FIRST LET ME INDRODUCE TO YOU ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING ARTEFACTS I HAVE SEEN FOR YEARS. THE CARTOON YOU SEE BELOW PICTURES A SHIP CARRYING THE BLUE RIBAND FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT SHOWS THE INMAN LINER "CITY OF NEW YORK" WHO ACQUIRED THIS MOST DESIRED TROPHY IN AUGUST 1892. ONE YEAR LATER IN THE YEAR THE CARICATURE WAS PUBLISHED SHE WAS SOLD TO THE AMERICAN LINE ( LATER USL) AND RENAMED "NEW YORK". THIS WAY THE US HAD THEIR FIRST RECORD HOLDER SINCE THE COLLINS PACKETS IN THE 1850s.
PLEASE NOTE THE BLUE RIBAND TOGETHER WITH THE STARS AND STRIPES FLYING AT THE SHIPS BOW AND THE BRITISH UNION JACK SINKING INTO THE SEAS AT THE RIGHT SIDE. ALSO NOTE THE WORDS BELOW THE SHIP WHICH SAY: "IT CAME HIGH BUT WE HAD TO HAVE IT".
THE SECOND PHOTO SHOWS THE "NORTH ATLANTIC BLUE RIBAND CHALLENGE TROPHY" OR HALES TROPHY WHICH WAS DONATED IN 1935. THIS UNIQUE PEACE OF ART (SOME PEOPLE ALSO MAY CALL IT A MONSTOSITY ) IS ALWAYS IN POSSESION OF THE RECORD HOLDER. THE BLUE RIBAND HOLDER TODAY IS UNDOUBTLY THE USL "S.S. UNITED STATES" ( 1952). ALTHOUGH IN 1990 THE BRITISH CHANNEL FERRY "SEA CAT" MADE A FASTER VOYAGE TO NEW YORK SHE IS NOT ENTITLED TO CARRY THE BLUE RIBAND FOR THE REASON THAT SHE IS NOT IN REGULAR SERVICE BETWEEN EUROPE AND AMERICA).

GREAT WESTERN", THE FIRST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL LINER CONSTRUCTED BY ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNELL, AN ENGLISH RAILWAY AND SHIP ENGINEER WHO WAS DECADES AHEAD OF HIS TIME.. .IN APRIL 1838 SHE CROSSED THE ATLANTIC FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM BRISTOL TO NEW YORK IN 14 DAYS, 17 HOURS AND 30 MINUTES WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OF INCREDIBLE 8, 62 !!! KNOTS. UNTIL 1840 THIS BEAUTIFUL LADY REMAINED THE FASTEST SHIP AT THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.
FIRST BANNER: CUNARD LINE UNTIL 1881 SECOND BANNER CUNARD LINE FROM 1882 ONWARD
"R.M.S. LUSITANIA "ONLY 70 YEARS ARE BETWEEN " PADDLE STEAMER GREAT WESTERN (1320 TONS)" AND THE TURBINE DRIVEN "ROYAL MAIL STEAMER LUSITANIA (31 550 TONS)". ALTHOUGH THE TWO LADIES COULD COULD NOT BE MORE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER. BOTH WERE REVOLUTIONARY IN TECHNIQUE AND DESIGN. R.M.S. LUSITANIA WHICH IS ALWAYS HIDDEN BEHIND HER MOR FAMOUS HALF- SISTER MAURETANIA, TOOK THE BLUE RIBBAND FIRST. IN OCTOBER 1907 SHE CROSSED THE ATLANTIC FROM LIVERPOOL TO NEW YORK IN 4 DAYS 19 HOURS AND 52 MINUTES AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 23, 99 KNOTS. IN MAY 1915 A FEW MILES OFF THE IRISH OLD HEAD OF KINSALE THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U 20 FIRED A TORPEDO AT THE SHIP WHICH CAUSED HER CARGO OF CONTRABAND (AMUNITION) TO EXPLODE. AT THIS MOST TERRIBLE SHIP DISASTER IN WORLD WAR I THE R. M. S. LUSITANIA SANKWITHIN ONLY 20 MINUTES !!! AND 1198 !!! INNOCENT PASSENGERS AND CREWS LOST THEIR LIVES.
T. S. ORIANA SHOWN HERE IN HER EARLY YEARS IN ORIENT LINE COLOURS WITH ITS TYPICAL BEIGE COLOURED HULL AND WHITE SUPERSTRUCTURE WAS LAUNCHED IN 1959. SIX YEARS LATER IN 1965 WHEN P & O ACQUIRED THE MAJORITY OF THE ORIENT LINE SHARES, T.S ORIANA WAS PAINTED ENTIRELY WHITE. SADLY. THIS BEAUTIFUL SHIP IS NOT IN SERVICE ANYMORE. TODAY SHE SERVES AS A TOURIST CENTER AND HOTEL IN BEPPU BAY ON THE JAPANESE ISLANDS OF KYUSHU.
S. S. NORWAY THE FORMER T. S. FRANCE, PRIDE OF FRENCH SHIP ENGINEERING SKILLS, IS ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING CLASSICAL TRUE TRANSATLANTIC LINERS .IN 1960 THE YEAR SHE WAS LAUNCHED, THE AMOUNT OF POTENTIAL PASSENGERS WILLING TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC IN STYLE, HAD ALREADY DECLINED. ALTHOUGH SHE WAS SOMEHOW SUCCESSFUL IN HER EARLY YEARS, THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAD TO SUBSIDIZE THIS "OBJET DE PRESTIGE" WITH MILLIONS OF FRANCS. THE END CAME IN 1974. THE PRIDE OF FRENCH SHIPPING WAS LAID UP AT THE QUAI DES OUBLIERS ( QUAY OF THE FORGOTTEN ) IN LE HAVRE. HER RESCUE CAME IN 1979 WHEN MR. LAURITZ KLOSTER DECIDED TO ACQUIRE THE BEAUTY FOR HIS CRUISE LINE AND RENAMED HER S.S. NORWAY. SHE WAS RESTORED AND PARTIALLY REBUILD 1979 AND 1990 IN BREMERHAVEN BUT NEVERTHELESS MUCH OF HER ORIGINAL INTERIOR ARCHITCTURE WAS SAVED. TODAY THE S. S. NORWAY IS MORE ALIVE THAN EVER AND BRINGS VACATION SEEKING PEOPLE FOR WEEKLY CRUISES TO THE BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS OF THE CAREBBEAN. WITH HER OVERALL LENGTH OF 315, 5 M SHE IS UP TO THIS DAY THE LONGEST PASSENGERSHIP IN THE WORLD.
M. S. INSPIRATION CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES 70 400 GRT FANASY CLASS LINER IS A MODEL IN 1: 500 SCALE. THE ORIGINAL IS CRUISING OUT OF SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO TO THE SOUTHERN ISLANDS OF THE CARIBBEAN. ON THIS TWO SNAPS YOU CAN SEE AN AERIAL VIEW ONTO THE DECK OF THE SHIP.
M.S.COSTA VICTORIA THE NEWEST ADDITION TO COSTA'S CRUISE LINE FLEET WAS THE LAST SHIP TO BE COMPLETED BY THE UNLUCKY SHIPYARD BREMER VULKAN IN BREMERHAVEN. THE MODEL OF THIS 74 000 GRT LINER IS ALSO BUILD IN 1: 500 SCALE.
